28. Constellation – Centaurus, the centaur

Centaurus is a large constellation which makes part of a story about worship and devotion along with the constellations of Lupus the wolf and Ara the Altar. The Greeks thought that Centaurus hold Lupus in his hand and tried to make way to Ara, the Altar, to make a sacrifice.

It was identified with Chiron or Polos, famous centaurs in Greek mythology. It was accidentally wounded by Hercules with an arrow and he learned what pain is. He became a healer and renounced to his immortality in favour of the Titan Prometheus.

The most important stars from Centaurus, in the order of magnitude are: Rigil Kentaurus (Toliman), Hadar (Agena) and Chort.

28.1 Rigil Kentaurus (Toliman, Bungula) – 290 Scorpio 46′

 

Rigil Kentaurus (Toliman) is the brightest star from Centaurus, located in the Centaur’s left foot.

Magnitude: – 0,3

Projected Ecliptical Degrees: 290 Scorpio 46′

Declination: 60S46′

Range of degrees with which can be in parans: from Aries to Leo

Planetary nature: Venus/Jupiter

Official name: Alpha Centaurus

 

Symbolism:

– friends, honor, morality;

– fatalistic attitude, problems with women, emotional difficulties;

– incurable injury, but outstanding talent.

28.2 Agena (Hadar) – 230 Scorpio 58′

 

Agena (Hadar) is the second brightest star from Centaurus, located in the Centaur’s foot. It is similar in nature with her sister star Bungula, but has a less intense effect.

Declination: 60S21’04”

Range of degrees with which can be in parans: from Aries to Leo

Planetary nature: Venus/Jupiter

Official name: Beta Centaurus
